My Definition of Personal Development

Before I discovered personal development, I thought the whole self-help industry was a scam. I thought it was all about just selling books and tapes to stupid and emotionally unstable people. I remember being in a book store and seeing the “self help” section and thinking to myself, “Who in the world reads that crap? Self help! I don’t need no help. I’m good.” It’s hysterical to me now to think back on my own ignorance. What an ignoramus!! And, since then, I’ve learned that anyone who feels like they are complete is a fool. Period.

I think Tony Robbins puts it best. His definition for personal development is CANI, Constant And Never-ending Improvement. I love that. Prior to hearing it put that way, I defined it like this.

Personal Development is a commitment to improving oneself over time by reading good books, listening to educational audios, attending workshops and classes to improve ones skills, disassociating with those who have your problems and associating with those who have your solutions, in order to improve the quality of your life and the quality of lives of those around you.

After hearing Tony Robbins discuss CANI, I altered my definition a bit.

Personal Development is a LIFELONG commitment to improving oneself over time by, reading good books, listening to education audios, attending workshops and classes to improve ones skills, disassociating with those who have your problems and associating with those who have your solutions, in order to improve the quality of your life and the quality of lives of those around you.

That definition is certainly subject to change over the years as I grow, but for now, that’s how I define personal development. And, by the way, it’s also the recipe for success in all areas of your life.

Regardless of the good government can do with policy, have we ever considered what would happen if there was a policy in place baswd around helping people to invest in personal development?? What a change that would occur!!
