How I Discovered Personal Development (Part 1 of 3)

Personal Development

It was 1998. I was a 26 year-old college drop-out. I was working as an account rep for an ice company that required lots of driving. One day between accounts, I was sitting in my car in a grocery store parking lot, my engine running, while stuffing my face with a greasy burger. Bored, I caught myself staring at the gages in my dashboard, when I noticed the temperature slowly going up. Oh no, I thought, not again. (On a trip from Hades  from Utah to Texas, my car did the same thing just before my radiator blew up.) I had absolutely no money in the bank, and knew if my radiator blew again, I’d be hanging out all day with Dr. Scholl’s.

Half scared of being car-less again, but half curious, I just sat there, continuing to stuff my face and watch the needle on my temperature gage go higher, and higher, and higher until, BOOM! Something under the hood exploded. Steam was going everywhere. What are the friggin’ odds, I thought, as I watched my radiator fluid ooze down the parking lot, still stuffing my face.

As it turns out, it was my radiator, and I became car-less again. But luckily, my parents were willing to loan me there extra car. This thing was a chic magnet! I was living large. I was jobless, car-less, and about to homeless, but at least I had my folks ride. A green Ford Escort station wagon.

Chick Magnet

As goofy as I felt driving the thing, I was very grateful. I had wheels. Now, I just needed a job.

Then something bizzar happened.

Have you ever had a dream, but forgot you had it, until something triggered it during the day? Like something happens, or someone says something, and it reminds you of the dream? Well, I had one of those experiences.

The dream was this…

I was walking out of church, and through the parking lot when a girl in a green Volkswagen Jetta, pulls up next to me and asks me if I wanted a job. I told her yes, and that was the end of the dream.

The dream never made it to my conscious mind, until the next day, when I was walking out of church, and through the parking lot, when a friend of mine, who I had never noticed drove a green Jetta, drove right by me. I waved at her and she waved at me as she went by. Then she stopped, put her car in reverse, rolled down the windows and yells out,

“Hey Chris! What do you do for a living?”

Thrown off by her random question, I looked a bit confused, I’m sure and yelled back, “Huh?”

“What do you do for a living?” she asked again.

“Well, I was an account rep for an ice company,” I said, “but my car blew up, so I had to quit. Right now, I’m looking for a new job, one where I don’t have to put a lot of miles on my parents car.” After inquiring how my car blew up and getting all the details, she said, “My brother owns a company here in town, he’s hiring. You should call him.”

I can’t remember if I asked about the specifics of the job, or just got her brothers number, or perhaps both. But what I do recall, is her driving off, and me reading the make and model of her car, and then it hit me! OH MY GOOOOODNESS!!!! I thought. I may have even said it out loud. My dream! My dream! This was in my dream!

I’ll be back tomorrow with the rest of the story.
