The Secret

The Law of Attraction (LOA) is a modern name for an ancient knowledge enjoyed by a very, very few people prior to the release of the ground breaking movie and subsequent book and audio, The Secret. The LOA is a universal law that has always existed, and was built into this universe by intelligent design. The law is simply this, those things that you think about often, and emotionalize, will come to pass. Period. Throughout time, the elite of all societies have known about and leveraged this power, and, passed it on from generation to generation. They have used this law to get everything they wanted, and kept it from the masses, so as to continue to have both power and control. It wasn’t until we began moving into the information age that this secret began to reach the mass mentality.

I first learned The Secret, the Law of Attraction, in 1998 from Jack Canfield. Jack certainly knows the secret. He has sold over 100,000,000 books in his career! (Ever heard of Chicken Soup for the Soul? That’s Jack!) Many of the top personal development gurus have been teaching these concepts since the birth of the personal development industry in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

My favorite LOA teachers are Jack Canfield, Bob Proctor, Napoleon Hill, Wallace Wattles and the undisputed Master, Jesus Christ. Some of my favorite books on the topic are, The Science of Getting Rich, You Were Born Rich, Think and Grow Rich and the Success Principles. (By the way, you can get 3 of the 4 books mentioned above FOR FREE, by signing up for my PD4FreeZine on my home page.)

It thrills and excited me that a “secret” so powerful, so hidden from the masses, and so magical is now known by so many. But on the flip side, I am baffled that seemingly so few are acting on the some of the most potent information on the planet. It has filled the airwaves around the world. It’s been discussed on countless radio programs. It’s been featured on Ellen, Oprah, Larry King, The View and many others. When this concept hit the main stream, it hit HARD! So hard in fact, that I perceive people are now tuning it out. Yeah, yeah, yeah… The Law of Attraction…Blah, blah, blah. I know about that. I saw The Secret. I watch Oprah.

It reminds me of a guy named Robin I met in Park City, UT. He was about 40 years old, single, never married and working the graveyard shift as a security guard earning $7 an hour. A guy I worked with recruited Robin and wanted me to help train him.

One of the first things I challenged Robin to do was to read the classic book, Think and Grow Rich. Before I could even finish saying the title of the book, he interrupted me and blurted, “Yeah! Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. I love that book! I read it like 20 years ago! It was awesome!”

This was a very important day in my own personal development. That was the day I realized that reading books and learning new things, even The Secret, was not in and of itself the end all. Here was a guy who, twenty years previous, had read the book that was the catalyst which freed me from from my own prison of poverty and mediocrity. Yet for him, it was just a happy memory. As far I could tell, there was no life change for him. I’m not saying he wasn’t happy or perfectly content. He may had been. But from my observation, he did not possess the things Mr. Hill’s book teaches how to acquire; including wealth, relationships, meaningful work, spirituality and much, much more.

It’s been my experience that most of the people I know, who have recently (within the last few years) gained a good understanding of the Law of Attraction, are not proactively using it to get the good they desire, including yours truly.

Prior to learning the LOA, I was a 26 year-old college drop-out. I was waiting tables at Chili’s earning less than $300 a week in tips. I was driving an 11 year-old car that was rarely insured or even functioning correctly. And, I lived in a nasty, cock roach and rat infested house built in 1927, that happened to be in one of the worst parts of town in Ft. Worth, Texas. After learning the LOA, in my poverty mind you, I made a list of all the things I wanted in life. It was quite a long list, some of which is included below.

  • Earn $2,000 a month (keep in mind, these were long term goals) :)
  • Earn $4,00 a month
  • Earn $8,000 a month
  • Earn $8,300 a month (times 12 months = $100,000 a year)
  • Earn $10,000 a month
  • Earn $20,000 a month
  • Find and marry my dream wife
  • Have children
  • Travel to Hawaii, Cancun and other places
  • Become an author and speaker
  • Buy a new car (it’s never smart to buy a car new, but I wanted to do it at least once)
  • Buy my first home

Using the LOA to the best of my ability, all of those things had been accomplished in just a few years. I went from poverty to riches in less than 3 years. And then from riches to millionaire in a few more years. And, as they say, it worked so well, I stopped doing it.

I’m a teacher of the LOA, and even as a teacher, one who has experienced near miraculous results, unfortunately tend to take this power for granted. How about you? Are you one who knows the LOA but isn’t purposefully using it to attract the good you desire? Here’s how you will know…

If you have known about and had a basic understanding of the LOA for more than a year, and have not experienced significant life change, it is my opinion that you too have taken this knowledge for granted. One year is long enough for you to have magnetized your mind, with some of the good you desire.

If you are one who desires a higher quality of life, whether it be money, success, health, romance or whatever, now is the time to be very honest with yourself so that you can finally live the life of you desires. Ask yourself the following questions.

How long have you known the Secret?

Has it been more than a year?

Has your life changed dramatically?

Do you have at least some of things you have held in your emotional and mental focus over the last year?

If you can’t answer the questions above affirmatively, I would recommend that you do a few homework assignments.

1. Watch (or rewatch) The Secret at least one more time (and take notes).

2. Register for my PD4FreeZine on my home page and I will send you 4 of the best books on the planet for teaching the LOA in great detail. These are the books I read that took me from poverty to wealth in a very short time. And they are yours for FREE!

3. Read the books. Study the books. Make notes, underlines and highlights in the book. While you are reading the book, have your journal handy so you can record your thoughts and feelings and anything you learn, either from the books, or perhaps what God or the universe (take your pick) teaches you via that still small voice in your head.

4. Apply the things you learn on a daily basis over time.

That’s it. That’s the secret to unlocking the LOA in your own life. And remember, the LOA works for both good and evil, and for positive and negative, so be careful and be wise, and have fun!

Thank you Mr. Hughes for the many pearls you gave us in this article. I am like you. Taking the info for granted. I’m going to go and find my copy of The Secret and do what you suggested. Many blessings to you and your family. You have all been on my mind and in my prayers. God Bless.

[...] In 2006, the world was taken by storm by Rhonda Byrne and her movie The Secret. The movie was designed to unveil a secret to the world that has, for the most part, been held only in the hands of the elite throughout the ages, and, has been withheld from the masses. I defined “the secret” (for those of you who don’t know) in another post. [...]
