The Awesome Power of Personal Development

A young 22 year-old kid from the bad part of Memphis, Tennessee knocked on the front door of my home in Southern California. He was selling magazine subscriptions. I wasn’t interested. During his “pitch” he mentioned he wanted to change his life. I asked him if he was serious. “Yes sir!” he exclaimed.

“Well then lets start by being honest.” I said, “You hate what you’re doin’ right now don’t you?” 

“Yes sir, I do sir!” He replied without thought or hesitation.

 I invited him into my home and gave him a glass of ice water. While he drank it, I told him my story, and asked if he would be interesting in my teaching him how to become wealthy.

“Yes sir! Oh yes sir!” he exclaimed.

  “Well first of all,” I started, “you can call me Chris. Your weirding me out with the sir stuff.”

“Oh yes sir! Sorry sir!!” he said again from habit.

  We both laughed out loud. 

I took him to have a good hot meal, which he said he hadn’t had in weeks. He was extremely grateful for the food, the company and the light on the horizon.

  “You read?” I asked?

“  Not much.” He replied.

  “You willing to change that? You want to be successful don’t you?”  

“Yes sir, I do Mr. Hughes! More than anything sir!”

  “Well then, you gotta read. Tell ya what, I’ll buy you your first book, if you promise me you’ll read it. If you benefit from the information in the book, write me a letter and tell me about it, and I’ll buy you another book to read. By the time you finish your second book, I promise you’ll be able to afford to buy the next one.  He accepted without an ounce of hesitation.

  After lunch we drove to the bookstore. I bought him a book…the same book that has altered the course of my life forever……

Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill.

  The rest is history.

Think and Grow Rich is something the Lord knows I needed!

What do I think it will do to change my life?

  Well, to start, I know for sure I can see further now with a clear vision. I’ve always been unique and labeled different from the average go-getter. I say that to say this. Since I was a kid I knew I would be rich someday but had no clue what to do or how to get the money. I tried this; and I tried that but ended up right back at square one. Why? Now I know from the knowledge endured from
reading Think and Grow Rich!

A positive attitude plays a big part of turning success inside out. Along with that positive attitude, I had no knowledge of how powerful organized planning was.  This time with the seven major positive emotions; desire, faith, love, sex, enthusiasm, romance, and hope, I intend to use them like ammo against fear, jealousy, hatred, greed, revenge, superstition, and anger! 

Like you I was raised around people who loved me but had little faith, negative attitudes, and a limit on how far they could go in life.
After reading that book I know it takes more than wanting. It takes doing what you have to do to get it, facing adversities, and most important, being consistent with persistence! I expect a whole new universe of power to unfold before me when God thinks I’m ready!

In return for the money I desire and will work to get…….
I will change my habits to habits that motivate and encourage the drive in me to become successful. I will work everyday towards gaining the knowledge and understanding I need to see clearly and open more doors of opportunity.

I will decide and be sure what road to take on the way to holding
down “my own” with confidence! I will not fold to any challenge or element in my way-on my way to becoming the Kevin I wanna be!

Is that incredible?! I was moved to tears as I read these words. It just amazes me even now, as I recount this story. The change in him as a result of reading ONE BOOK was near miracle”

He was a run of the mill inner-city kid. He admitted to me that he struggled with drugs and alcohol. He took a job selling magazines door to door 2,000 miles from his home, for peanuts, because he had no education, no money, no car, no family to help him out, and worse than all, no hope.

That same kid, read one book and he came to life! His course was forever changed because he got the book! 

I love this story because it so beautifully displays the awesome power of personal development. If Kevin morphed that much after having read one book, think what would be possible for him, or you or anyone else who commits to what Tony Robbins calls CANI; constant and never-ending improvement. Wow!! It’s stunning! I hope everybody GETS IT!
